Composite Door Lock Not Working? We Fix It Properly

Composite doors use a different locking system to standard wooden or uPVC doors. They combine a euro profile cylinder with a multipoint locking mechanism — and when either component fails, the door either won't lock at all, or the handle drops and the lock strips no longer engage. It's frustrating, and in some cases it leaves your home unsecured.

The good news: most composite door lock problems don't need a full mechanism replacement. A snapped or worn cylinder, a failed gearbox, or a misaligned door can often be fixed for considerably less than a complete multipoint strip overhaul. We diagnose first — we won't replace parts that don't need replacing. If you're not sure whether yours needs a repair or a replacement, that's exactly what the call is for. For context on what might be causing the issue, see our guide on doors that won't lock.

We carry standard-length euro cylinders and common gearbox makes (ERA, GU, Winkhaus, Mila) in the van. Most composite door lock jobs in South London are done in a single visit, within 30 minutes of arrival. Read more about our team on our About Us page or see our locksmith advice guides for more on how composite door locks work.

🔒 Insurance compliance note

Many composite doors are sold with standard cylinders that don't meet BS3621 or TS007 3-star insurance requirements. If your insurer requires an approved lock and your current cylinder doesn't qualify, we can upgrade to an Ultion, Avocet, or ERA Fortress cylinder at the same visit. Ask us when you call.

Why Composite Door Locks Fail

Six common reasons — knowing which one applies can save you the cost of a full replacement.

Failed Gearbox

The gearbox inside the door drives the locking strip. When it fails, lifting the handle does nothing — the hook bolts don't move. The handle often feels floppy or drops after use. A gearbox replacement fixes this without touching the cylinder.

Worn Euro Cylinder

The key barrel wears over time — particularly in older cylinders without anti-snap protection. Signs: key turns stiffly, cylinder wobbles in the door, or key won't turn at all. A cylinder swap typically takes 20 minutes and costs from £135.

Snapped Cylinder

Composite door cylinders without anti-snap protection can be snapped with a screwdriver in seconds — a common break-in method. If your cylinder has snapped (part of it has broken off), the door can be opened without a key. Call us immediately.

Door Misalignment

Composite doors can drop on their hinges over time, especially in older frames. When the door sags, the hook bolts and rollers no longer align with the keeps in the frame — the mechanism tries to lock but can't catch. Hinge adjustment often solves this before any lock parts are touched.

Worn Multipoint Strip

The locking strip itself — the long metal bar running up the door edge — wears out on heavy-use doors. Individual locking points (rollers, hooks, deadbolts) can stop engaging. If multiple points fail at once, the full strip may need replacing. We can source ERA, GU, Fuhr, and Mila strips.

Lack of Maintenance

Composite door mechanisms need annual lubrication with silicone or PTFE spray — not WD-40. WD-40 strips the protective grease and attracts grit, accelerating wear. If your lock has been treated with WD-40 for years, the mechanism may need a full service even if it hasn't seized yet.

What To Do While You Wait

If your composite door won't lock and we're on the way — a few things to do and avoid.

1

Don't Force the Handle

If the handle has dropped or the mechanism is grinding, forcing it can break the gearbox completely — turning a repair job into a full mechanism replacement. Leave the handle in whatever position it is and wait for us.

2

Don't Use WD-40

It's tempting when a lock is stiff. Don't. WD-40 in a failing gearbox washes out remaining grease and can push internal debris further into the mechanism. If you have silicone spray, a small amount in the keyhole is fine — but don't soak the mechanism.

3

Secure the Door If It Won't Lock

If the door is closed but won't lock, push it firmly shut to engage the latch at least. If you're leaving the property, call us from outside — don't leave the door unsecured. We can meet you there if needed.

★★★★★

“The handle on our composite front door had completely dropped — couldn't lock it at all. Called at 8pm, locksmith was here within 25 minutes. Turned out it was the gearbox. Replaced it on the spot, tested everything, and even showed us how to oil it properly going forward. Brilliant service.”

“Our composite door lock was original to the house and had no anti-snap at all. Got a quote over the phone for an Ultion upgrade, which was clear and didn't change when he arrived. Job took half an hour, door now feels completely solid. Would recommend to anyone in South London.”

★★★★★

“Key was turning but the door wasn't locking — left my home unsecured overnight which was stressful. First thing next morning the locksmith diagnosed a worn multipoint strip rather than the cylinder I assumed was broken. Only needed a gearbox, not the full strip. Honest diagnosis saved me about £150.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about composite door lock replacement in South London.

How much does it cost to replace a composite door lock in South London?
Euro cylinder replacement starts from £135. Anti-snap cylinder upgrades (Ultion, Avocet, ERA Fortress) start from £200 and include an insurance-compliant TS007 3-star cylinder. Gearbox and full multipoint strip replacements are priced by photo — send us pictures on WhatsApp for an accurate fixed quote. All prices include parts, labour, and keys. No call-out fee, no VAT.
What type of lock does a composite door have?
Most composite doors use a multipoint locking system — a strip of locking points (hook bolts, deadbolts, rollers) that engage when you lift the door handle. The key operates a euro profile cylinder, which is the barrel you insert the key into. Common gearbox brands fitted inside composite doors include ERA, GU, Winkhaus, Fuhr, and Mila. The cylinder and gearbox are separate components and can usually be replaced independently.
How do I know if my composite door lock needs replacing or just repairing?
If the handle has dropped, the door won't lock when you lift the handle, or the key turns without the locking points engaging, the gearbox is the most likely culprit — and it can often be repaired without replacing the full mechanism. If the key is stiff, wobbly, or turns but nothing happens, the cylinder is more likely the issue. A locksmith visit will confirm which component has failed and give you the repair vs. replacement cost. Most composite door lock issues don't require full mechanism replacement.
Why won't my composite door lock when I lift the handle?
The most common causes are: a failed gearbox (the internal mechanism no longer drives the locking strip when the handle is lifted), door misalignment (the door has dropped and the hook bolts can't reach the keeps in the frame), or a worn multipoint strip where individual locking points have broken. Don't force the handle — call us. Forcing a seized gearbox can turn a £150 repair into a full mechanism replacement.
Should I use WD-40 on a stiff composite door lock?
No. WD-40 is a water displacer and rust remover, not a lubricant. Applied to a composite door lock, it strips the protective grease inside the mechanism and attracts dust and grit — accelerating wear rather than fixing it. Use a silicone spray or PTFE lubricant instead. Apply a small amount to the keyhole and the lock face annually. If your lock is already seizing despite lubrication, the mechanism itself needs replacing.
What is the best anti-snap lock for a composite door?
We fit Ultion, Avocet ABS, and ERA Fortress cylinders — all rated TS007 3-star, which is the highest UK security standard for euro cylinders. All three feature anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill, and anti-bump protection. They also meet BS3621 insurance requirements. Ultion in particular uses a hidden inner lock that engages if snapping is attempted, making forced entry almost impossible. We carry all three brands in the van in common composite door sizes.
How long does a composite door lock replacement take?
A standard euro cylinder replacement takes 20–30 minutes. Gearbox replacement typically takes 45–90 minutes depending on the mechanism and door access. Full multipoint strip replacement, if required, usually takes 1.5–2 hours. We carry common ERA, GU, Winkhaus, and Mila gearboxes on the van, so most jobs are completed in a single visit without ordering parts.
