A jammed lock is more than a nuisance — it often means the cylinder is close to failing completely. We clear most jammed locks without replacing them, at a fixed price, with no call-out fee.
When a lock jams, most people's instinct is to force the key. That's the one thing you shouldn't do. A jammed lock usually means one of three things: the bolt mechanism has seized internally, the cylinder is worn and the tumblers won't align, or the door has shifted in its frame and the bolt is under pressure. Forcing it risks snapping the key inside, which turns a £120 job into something considerably more involved. Our locksmiths carry specialist jammed lock tools and are trained in non-destructive entry — in most cases we clear the jam without replacing anything.
Here's the part most locksmiths won't tell you upfront: a jammed lock is often a warning sign. If your lock has started stiffening up, if the key feels gritty or heavy to turn, or if this is the second or third time it's happened, there's a good chance the cylinder is close to failing completely. A worn euro cylinder that's been struggling for months is also far more vulnerable to key snapping in the lock — and a snapped key inside a cylinder usually means the whole cylinder needs replacing anyway. Getting it checked costs nothing; ignoring it can mean being locked out at midnight. If your lock won't turn at all, that's a related but slightly different fault we also cover.
When we arrive, we diagnose before we touch anything. We'll check whether the fault is mechanical (internal cylinder wear, debris in the keyway, dried-out lubrication), physical (door drop, misaligned strike plate, swollen frame from damp), or security-related (a partially engaged anti-snap mechanism after a near break-in). Then we give you a fixed price. If the lock can be cleared and serviced, we do that. If the cylinder is genuinely past it, we'll tell you honestly and quote for a replacement — not every locksmith will. We also see a lot of doors that won't lock at all, which is often the same root cause at a later stage.
Common on locks older than 10 years. The internal pins and springs wear down, leaving the tumblers unable to align correctly when the key is inserted. The lock feels stiff, then jams entirely.
Dust, dirt, and grit accumulate in the keyhole over time. Once compacted, it blocks the pins from dropping into position. This is especially common on external front doors facing the street.
If the door has dropped or the frame has shifted (common in older South London terraces), the bolt sits off-centre in the strike plate. The lock mechanism has to fight the pressure of the door itself.
A key that is even slightly bent or worn at the tip won't fully engage the tumblers. The lock feels like it's jamming, but the fault is actually with the key. Attempting to force it wears the cylinder faster.
After a near break-in attempt, an anti-snap cylinder can partially trigger its snap-protection mechanism. The front section of the cylinder disengages, leaving the lock in an intermediate state — neither fully locked nor openable.
Lock mechanisms need periodic lubrication. When graphite or PTFE lubricant dries out completely, metal pins grind directly against the cylinder housing. This creates high friction, making the lock feel seized even when mechanically intact.
Before we even set off, we ask you to describe the symptoms. Is the key turning but the bolt not moving? Is the key not turning at all? Has this happened before? The answers tell us what tools to bring and often let us give you an accurate price over the phone.
A DBS-checked locksmith heads to you with specialist jammed-lock tools — including cylinder manipulation tools, pick sets, and a full range of replacement cylinders if needed. We cover all SW, SE, CR, SM and BR postcodes in South London.
We clear the jam using non-destructive methods wherever possible. Then we inspect the internals — cylinder wear, debris, alignment. If the lock is salvageable with lubrication and a service, we do that. If it needs replacing, we tell you honestly and quote immediately. You decide.
We respond to jammed lock calls across the full South London area — from Brixton and Clapham in the north, through Croydon, Sutton, Wallington, Purley and Coulsdon in the south, and across to Bromley, Beckenham and Norbury. If you're in Thornton Heath, Norbury, Sanderstead, Kenley, South Croydon, Streatham, Tooting, Merton or Wimbledon and your lock is jammed, we're close by. Our locksmiths are based across South London — not dispatched from a central depot — which is how we keep response times under 30 minutes for most areas.

This is the one thing that turns a simple jammed lock into an expensive extraction job. Even gentle force can snap a worn key inside the cylinder. Leave it alone — we'll be with you in 30 minutes.
If you have graphite powder, a small amount in the keyhole can help. WD-40 is oil-based — it attracts dirt and makes jammed locks worse over time. If you don't have graphite, leave it for us.
Gently lift the door handle while turning the key slowly. If the door has dropped even a few millimetres, the bolt sits off-centre in the strike plate and that pressure alone can cause the jam. Lifting the door sometimes releases it.
"Front door lock jammed at 8pm on a Tuesday. Called, got a price over the phone, locksmith was at my door in under 25 minutes. Turned out the cylinder was badly worn — he showed me exactly what was happening and gave me the choice of service or replacement. No pressure at all. Sorted within the hour."
"My lock had been getting stiff for weeks and finally seized completely. I'd been putting off calling because I expected it to be expensive. It wasn't — the locksmith lubricated and serviced it, said the cylinder had a bit more life in it, and recommended I keep an eye on it. Refreshingly honest. Will call them again when it does need replacing."
"Woke up to a completely jammed back door lock — couldn't get in or out the back at all. The locksmith identified it immediately as a door alignment issue putting pressure on the bolt. He adjusted the strike plate, the lock opened clean, and charged exactly what he quoted. 28 minutes from my call to job done."
