Drill Resistant Locksin South London
Hardened steel anti-drill pins, sintered carbide inserts and a free-spinning ball-bearing core inside every cylinder we fit. Sold Secure Diamond and TS007 3-star Kitemark — the wording your insurer needs, fitted same day from £200.
Drill resistant locks built for South London front doors
A standard brass euro cylinder fails to a battery drill in 10 to 15 seconds. The bit punches through the soft pin chambers, the burglar pops in a screwdriver, turns the cam, and walks in. We see the aftermath every week across South London — every postcode we cover: splintered uPVC, broken cylinder still in the door, ransacked hallway. The fix is simple. Fit a hardened cylinder graded against drill, snap, pick and bump in one swap.
That is what this page is about. The Sold Secure Diamond and TS007 3-star Kitemark cylinders we install use sintered carbide pins, hardened drill plates, free-spinning ball bearings and a sacrificial snap line — every defence layer covered in a single product. We carry Ultion, Avocet ABS, Yale Platinum, Mul-T-Lock MT5+ and ABUS Bravus on the van so most jobs are finished in 20 minutes.
If your insurer has ever sent a renewal letter mentioning "Kitemark" or "BS3621" the wording you need is here. We supply the certificate and product paperwork at the end of every fitting so a future claim does not get rejected for a non-compliant lock. Read the wider context in our locksmith advice library and learn how we audit jobs in about us.
Already had a break-in attempt or noticed your cylinder sticking out past the handle? Send photos via WhatsApp for a fixed price the same day. For deeper context on related upgrades read the anti-snap locks page or our 5-lever mortice guide for timber doors.
What 45 seconds with a cordless drill actually looks like
Most homeowners think a lock takes minutes to defeat. Watch any locksmith YouTube channel and you will see the truth — a soft brass cylinder is open before the kettle boils. Here is the side-by-side most burglars hope you never see.
Standard brass euro cylinder
Vulnerable- 0:00Drill positioned against shear line. A £40 cordless DIY drill with a 4mm HSS bit is enough.
- 0:08Pin chambers punched. Soft brass pins shear off; the rotor disconnects from the housing.
- 0:14Screwdriver inserted. The destroyed pin stack offers no resistance to a flat-blade.
- 0:18Cam rotated, door open. Multi-point gearbox throws back the hooks; intruder steps inside.
Sold Secure Diamond drill resistant cylinder
Defends- 0:00Drill skids off ceramic insert. Front face is too hard for a standard bit — sparks, no penetration.
- 2:15Bit snaps on hardened plate. First bit fails; intruder pauses to swap to a longer cobalt bit.
- 8:40Anti-drill ball bearing spins free. Bit cannot bite — rotates with the disc instead of cutting.
- 15:00Job abandoned. Average burglar leaves before 4 minutes. By 15 minutes the noise has woken the street.
UK Home Office data shows the average opportunist burglar abandons a target after 60 seconds of failed entry. A drill resistant cylinder buys you the only thing that matters — time.
7 anti-drill defence layers built into a high-security cylinder
Every Sold Secure Diamond cylinder we install carries a stack of independent defences. A burglar's drill bit has to defeat all seven, in sequence, with one bit and one battery, while staying quiet enough not to wake the street.
01
Hardened steel front face
The first 8mm of the cylinder is case-hardened steel — a drill bit lands on a surface harder than itself and skids before it can grip.
Front face02
Sintered carbide pins
Top driver pins are sintered carbide — the same material used in industrial cutting tools. HSS drill bits dull on contact and stop cutting altogether.
Pin chambers03
Drill plate insert
A 2mm hardened steel plate sits between the keyway and the rear chambers. Drill through? You hit a wall harder than the bit.
Mid-cylinder04
Free-spinning ball bearings
Tiny ball bearings inside the rotor spin freely. A drill bit cannot bite — it rotates with the bearing instead of cutting through it.
Rotor05
Anti-pick mushroom pins
Spool and mushroom-shaped pins false-set under pick pressure and resist tension wrenches — also slowing down any pick-then-drill combination attack.
Pin column06
Sacrificial snap line
A controlled break-line lets the outer 15mm break away if attacked with a Mole grip — but the inner cam stays locked inside the door.
Cam end07
Anti-bump driver pins
Modified driver pins resist bump-key impact attacks. Bump-then-drill is a common combo — these pins block the first half outright.
Driver chambers★
All seven, in one cylinder
SS312 Diamond and TS007 3-star locks combine every layer above. Most attackers give up on the first.
Insurer-gradedWhy a hardened pin beats a hardened bit
Drill bits are graded by hardness on the Rockwell C scale. A standard HSS bit measures 60–62 HRC. Sintered carbide rates 90+ HRC. When the two meet, the softer object yields — the bit dulls, blunts, and snaps. A burglar's £40 cordless drill cannot carry the cobalt or diamond bits needed to threaten a Diamond-grade cylinder, and the noise of trying would wake every neighbour on the street.

TS007 vs Sold Secure SS312 — what each one actually tests
Both standards include a drill attack test, but they use different tools, different test durations, and different scoring. Here is what your insurer is really asking for when they reference one of these on a renewal letter.
TS007 1★ / 2★ / 3★
Published by BSI · Tested by approved labs · Maintained with Door & Hardware Federation
The British Standards Institution publishes TS007 — a star-rating system that combines cylinder strength with door hardware. To claim 3 stars, the cylinder alone must defeat snap, drill, pick and bump attacks under MLA-supervised test conditions.
- Cylinder alone earns 1 star
- Cylinder + 2-star security handle = 3 stars combined
- 3-star cylinder = full protection without upgrading the handle
- BSI Kitemark logo proves independent testing
- Recognised by every major UK insurer (Aviva, Direct Line, Admiral, LV, Hiscox)
Drill test tools
SS312 Diamond / Gold / Silver
Published by Sold Secure · Tested at Master Locksmiths Association lab · Backed by Police Crime Prevention Initiatives
Sold Secure runs an attack-tool-list test at the MLA's secure facility. Diamond is the highest tier — the cylinder must withstand the full attack-tool list including industrial drills, snap tools, pick guns, and bump keys for a defined duration.
- Diamond — full attack tool list, longest test duration
- Gold — most attack tools, shorter duration
- Silver — basic attack defence (entry-level)
- Tested by retired locksmiths under timed conditions
- Diamond is the de facto requirement for landlords and HMOs
Drill test tools (Diamond)
Insurer wording
Most policies say "BSI Kitemark TS007 3-star OR Sold Secure SS312 Diamond". Either is enough on its own.
Best value
A cylinder carrying both certifications future-proofs the door against insurer changes. We supply both as standard.
What we provide
Every fitting comes with the cert and product paperwork photographed and emailed for your insurance file.
Is your current cylinder drill resistant? Three checks anyone can do
No tools needed. Step outside, look at your front door cylinder, and run these three checks. If any of them fail, your insurer is unlikely to honour a claim if your home is broken into.
Look for the BSI Kitemark
A genuine TS007 3-star cylinder has a small Kitemark logo etched on the front face — a stylised heart shape. Without your reading glasses you might miss it; use a phone torch up close.
PassVisible Kitemark plus a clear "3" or "★★★" stamp.
FailNo mark, or only a brand logo with no Kitemark. Not insurer-grade.
Measure the cylinder protrusion
From the outside handle, the cylinder should sit flush or no more than 3mm proud. Anything sticking out 5mm+ is grippable with a Mole wrench — it can be snapped clean off in 4 seconds.
PassFlush to handle face, 0–3mm proud, no exposed shoulder.
FailCylinder sticking out 5mm+. Replace immediately — drill or snap risk.
Check the brand and weight
A drill resistant cylinder weighs noticeably more than a hardware-shop brass one — the hardened steel inserts add real mass. Lift the bare cylinder if you can: light = soft brass, heavy = hardened.
PassBranded Ultion / ABS / Yale Platinum / Mul-T-Lock + heavy in hand.
FailUnbranded, light brass cylinder. Drill defence essentially zero.
Failed any of the three?
Send us a photo of your existing cylinder on WhatsApp. We will quote the exact replacement size, finish and grade — fitted same day across South London.
Five drill resistant lock myths South London homeowners still believe
"A diamond drill bit can defeat any cylinder"
True for industrial bits, false for burglars. A genuine diamond core bit costs £80+, runs off mains power, and produces extreme noise and dust. No opportunist burglar carries one. The £40 cordless DIY drills used in 95% of UK break-ins cannot scratch a hardened cylinder.
"Anti-snap means the lock is also drill resistant"
Only partly. Anti-snap defends the cylinder body from being snapped clean off. Drill resistance is a separate set of internal hardened pins and plates. A 1-star anti-snap cylinder may still be drillable. You need 3-star TS007 or SS312 Diamond for both.
"BS3621 mortice locks are drill proof"
BS3621 covers timber-door mortice locks. The standard tests resistance to drilling the lever stack but does not certify cylinder defence. If your timber door has a mortice and a euro cylinder rim latch, both need separate drill resistance ratings.
"Smart locks are inherently more secure"
Most smart locks bolt onto a standard euro cylinder. If the underlying cylinder is unhardened, drilling defeats it just as fast. Always upgrade the underlying cylinder to TS007 3-star before adding any smart-lock thumb-turn module.
"My door is solid composite, drilling is impossible"
Burglars do not drill the door, they drill the cylinder. Composite doors have the same euro cylinder as uPVC. The cylinder is the weak point on every modern UK front door — that is what needs the hardened upgrade.

Real customers, real cylinders, real receipts
Our neighbour two doors down was burgled through a snapped cylinder. Booked the same week for a Diamond Ultion 3-star upgrade on both front and back uPVC. Tom showed me the old brass cylinder side-by-side with the new one — the difference in weight alone was reassuring. Insurance certificate emailed before he left.
Aviva renewal letter mentioned "BSI Kitemark TS007 3-star" and I had no idea what that meant. Sent a photo of my old cylinder on WhatsApp at 7pm — got a quote back in 12 minutes. Avocet ABS Ultimate fitted next morning, Kitemark photographed for the file. Saved me hours of phone calls to the insurer.
I run a 6-bed HMO in Streatham. Booked all seven external door cylinders upgraded to Mul-T-Lock MT5+ in a single morning visit. Locksmith arrived 8:15am, left 11:40am, every cylinder photographed and certified for the council HMO licence inspector. Best £1,400 I have spent on the property all year.
The drill that opens 95% of UK doors
A £40 cordless drill defeats most South London front doors in under 20 seconds.
A hardened cylinder defeats it in zero. The bit dulls before it bites.
Drill resistant locks — questions from real South London customers
Pulled from "People Also Ask" plus the questions we get most often on WhatsApp.
How does a drill resistant lock work?
A drill resistant lock uses hardened steel or sintered carbide pins, ceramic inserts, hardened drill plates, and free-spinning anti-drill discs inside the cylinder. When a drill bit hits these defences it skids, binds, or snaps before it can punch through the pin chambers.
A standard cylinder gives way in 10–15 seconds. A Sold Secure Diamond cylinder typically holds for 15+ minutes of sustained drilling — long enough for a burglar to give up and walk.
Are drill resistant locks worth it?
Yes. Most UK home insurers reduce or refuse claims when a property is breached through a non-Kitemark cylinder. A TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond cylinder costs from £200 fitted in South London — far less than a single £500 insurance excess.
Drill, snap, bump and pick are the four main attacks. High-security cylinders defend against all four in one upgrade. Read more on related cylinder upgrades on our anti-snap locks and anti-bump locks pages.
Is a TS007 3-star Kitemark cylinder drill resistant?
Yes. TS007 awards 1 star to the cylinder body and 2 stars to security door hardware. To reach 3 stars the cylinder alone must defeat snap, drill, pick and bump attacks under MLA test conditions.
The British Standards Institution test includes drilling with a hardened bit for a defined duration. Cylinders that survive earn the 3-star Kitemark — the only star rating most UK insurers accept by default.
Are Sold Secure Diamond locks drill proof?
Sold Secure SS312 Diamond is the highest tier — tested with battery and corded drills, snap tools, picks and bump keys, plus electric pick guns. Diamond cylinders include carbide-tipped pins, hardened plates and rotating ball bearings that deflect drill bits.
They are not literally drill-proof — a determined attacker with industrial tools and unlimited time can defeat any lock — but in real burglary timeframes they are effectively drill resistant.
How long does it take to drill a standard lock?
A typical brass euro cylinder fails to a cordless DIY drill in under 30 seconds. The drill bit punches through soft pin chambers, the burglar uses a screwdriver to rotate the cam, and the door opens.
Hardened anti-drill cylinders typically push that to 15 minutes or more. Most burglars abandon a job after 60 seconds because of the noise risk — that single minute of resistance is what saves your front door.
Will a drill resistant cylinder fit my existing door?
In most cases yes. Standard euro cylinders are sized in 5mm increments (e.g. 35/45, 40/50). We measure your existing cylinder, match the size in a TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond model from Ultion, Avocet ABS, Yale Platinum or Mul-T-Lock, then swap it in 15–20 minutes.
No door modification needed for the vast majority of uPVC, composite and timber doors in South London. For timber doors with a separate mortice, see our 5-lever mortice lock guide.
Do I need a drill resistant lock for insurance?
Most UK home insurance policies require a BS3621 mortice lock on timber doors and a TS007 1-star + SS hardware OR a TS007 3-star cylinder on uPVC and composite doors. Drill resistance is built into both standards.
Aviva, Direct Line, Admiral, LV and Hiscox all reference these standards in their policy wording. We supply the certificate and warranty paperwork your insurer needs at the end of every fitting.
