Your Shed Is Only as Secure as Its Weakest Point

Most garden sheds are secured with a £6 brass padlock threaded through a hasp held on with four visible screws. That combination can be defeated in under ten seconds — no specialist tools required. The padlock gets picked, or the screws get removed, or a pair of bolt croppers snaps the exposed shackle. The contents inside — power tools, lawnmowers, bicycles, workshop equipment — are often worth thousands.

Shed break-ins are among the most common property crimes across South London. Unlike house burglaries, they often go unreported and are rarely investigated. The deterrent value of proper security is enormous: when a shed door takes more than 60 seconds to defeat, most opportunist thieves move on.

The hasp is usually the weak point, not the padlock. Even an expensive closed-shackle padlock becomes useless if the hasp is fitted with exposed coach bolts that can be unscrewed in seconds. Upgrading both together — security hasp with concealed fixings, paired with a Sold Secure Gold rated padlock — is the only combination that genuinely holds.

We install shed security hardware across South London, covering everything from a single padlock upgrade to a full outbuilding security audit. All locks we supply are Sold Secure rated, insurance-compliant, and sourced from brands that UK testers have actually verified — ABUS, Squire, and Brisant, not anonymous hardware-shop stock. For garage door security, see our dedicated page. For anti-snap upgrades on your main door, we cover those too.

If your shed stores anything you'd be upset to lose, the investment in proper locks is minimal compared to the replacement cost — and it protects your insurance cover. Read on for a full breakdown of shed lock types, attack methods, Sold Secure ratings, and what installation involves across South London.

4 Shed Types & What Each Needs

The material and design of your shed dictates which security hardware fits correctly and provides adequate resistance.

Timber Apex Shed

The UK's most common shed type. Wooden door frames accept standard hasps and staples, but softwood screws strip easily. Coach bolts through the frame are essential for security hasps.

Security hasp + closed-shackle padlock

Timber Pent Shed

Single-pitch roof design, often used as a workshop or cycle store. Door panels are wider, so a heavy-duty padbar (welded padlock protector) can add extra physical resistance against prying.

Padbar + discus padlock + hasp

Metal / Steel Shed

More resistant to pry attacks but metal panels can flex. Fitting a hasp often requires drilling and specialist fasteners — surface-mount screws into thin steel are inadequate. Internal bar bolts add value here.

Internal bar bolt + external discus padlock

Plastic / Composite Shed

Cheapest option but the weakest structure — walls and door frames deform under load. A secure lock is less effective if the surrounding material fails. External anchor points for ground anchors are worth adding.

7 Padlock Types — Which One Do You Need?

Not all padlocks perform the same. The shackle design, material, and rating determine what attack tools they can withstand.

Recommended

Closed-Shackle

The shackle is recessed inside the body — minimal exposed metal for bolt croppers or saws. Gold standard for shed security.

Bolt cropper resistant
Recommended

Discus / Round

No exposed shackle at all — the circular body encases the lock mechanism entirely. Purpose-built to defeat bolt croppers.

No exposed shackle

Open-Shackle

Traditional U-shaped shackle fully exposed. Fine for low-risk applications but vulnerable to bolt croppers on standard steel.

Shackle exposed to croppers

Long-Shackle

Extended shackle for oversized hasps or chains. The extra shackle length gives bolt croppers an easier target — use only where closed-shackle physically won't fit.

Avoid for sheds if possible

Chain Padlock

A padlock designed to thread through a hardened chain, useful for anchoring bikes or equipment inside the shed. Chain hardness matters as much as the padlock itself.

Chain quality critical

Combination Lock

No key required — useful when multiple family members need access. Security is only as good as the code discipline. Dial combinations are vulnerable to feel attacks; disc combinations are better.

Code security varies

Smart Padlock

Bluetooth or app-controlled access logging. Good for commercial outbuildings or shared access scenarios. Requires battery management and is not yet insurance-rated by Sold Secure for most domestic policies.

Insurance rating: check policy

The UK Sold Secure Rating System Explained

Sold Secure is the UK's independent security product testing body. Every padlock we fit carries a Sold Secure certification — here's what each grade means in practice.

Bronze

Sold Secure Bronze

Entry-level certification. The lock resists basic hand tools for a minimum defined test duration.

Tests against: Basic hand tools, basic picks, key manipulation
Low-risk sheds only
Silver

Sold Secure Silver

Mid-range rating. Resists enhanced attack tools and sustained effort over a longer test period. Many insurers require minimum Silver for outbuildings.

Tests against: Enhanced hand tools, bolt croppers up to 600mm, picking
Minimum recommended
Gold

Sold Secure Gold

High-security rating. Withstands dedicated tools including large bolt croppers and power tools for extended periods. Our default recommendation for sheds with bikes or power tools inside.

Tests against: Large bolt croppers, angle grinders, power tools, advanced picking
Recommended for most sheds
Diamond

Sold Secure Diamond

Highest available rating. Resists specialist power tools and sustained professional attacks. Typically used for motorcycles and high-value commercial storage.

Tests against: Specialist power tools, disc cutters, professional attack methods
High-value contents

The Hasp Is Usually the Weak Point

Most shed break-ins don't defeat the padlock — they defeat the hasp. A £50 padlock on a £3 hasp screwed with surface-mount wood screws offers almost no protection.

Standard Hasp (Exposed Screws)

Avoid

Four or six visible screw heads on the face plate. A screwdriver or pry bar removes the entire hasp assembly in under 30 seconds without touching the padlock. This is the most common setup on off-the-shelf sheds.

Coach-Bolt Hasp

Improved

Fixings pass through the door and are secured with nuts on the inside, making removal much harder. Still vulnerable to pry attacks on thin timber doors, but significantly better than surface-screwed hasps.

Security Hasp (Concealed Fixings)

Recommended

When the padlock is closed, the fixing bolts are completely hidden under the hasp body — impossible to access without first opening the padlock. These paired with a closed-shackle padlock form the recommended combination for any shed containing items worth protecting.

Padbar / Shroud

High Security

A welded steel shroud bolted directly to the door frame, surrounding the padlock completely. Protects against both cutting attacks on the shackle and prying attacks on the hasp. Common on metal sheds and commercial outbuildings.

The 30-Second Rule

Security researchers and police crime prevention officers agree: if a shed takes more than 60 seconds to defeat, most opportunist thieves abandon the attempt. Standard hasp-and-padlock installations fail this test in under 30 seconds.

A properly fitted security hasp with a Sold Secure Gold closed-shackle padlock typically takes 3–5 minutes for a prepared attacker — and produces significant noise. That's the deterrence threshold that matters.

How Shed Thieves Actually Work

Understanding the four common attack methods tells you exactly which hardware to fit. Generic advice to "get a good padlock" misses the point — the attack that gets used depends on what's already installed.

Bolt Cropper Attack

The most common method. A standard 600mm bolt cropper cuts through a 10mm hardened steel shackle in one squeeze. Open-shackle padlocks — even expensive ones — are highly vulnerable because the shackle is fully exposed and provides a clear target.

Open shackle: <5s
Closed shackle: 30–60s
Discus: often fails

Angle Grinder Attack

Used when bolt croppers fail or the thief is prepared. A 4-inch angle grinder cuts through an exposed shackle in 15–30 seconds. Produces sparks, noise, and cordless grinders require power — so this typically indicates a targeted theft rather than opportunism.

Open shackle: 15–30s
Closed shackle: 60–90s
Sold Secure Gold: 3–5min
Sold Secure Gold rated lock + hardened steel shroud/padbar

Pry Bar / Crow Bar

The most common attack on exposed-fixing hasps. A flat pry bar levered between hasp and door pulls the screws clean out of softwood in seconds. This attack entirely bypasses the padlock — even a Diamond-rated lock is useless on a flimsy hasp.

Standard hasp: <30s
Coach bolt hasp: 2–3min
Security hasp: highly resistant
Security hasp with concealed fixings — this attack is the main reason hasp quality matters

Lock Picking / Shimming

Less common but used on cheap padlocks. Low-grade padlocks with minimal internal pins can be picked in under a minute with basic tools. Shimming attacks target the shackle retaining mechanism directly. Padlocks under £15 from hardware shops typically fail both tests.

Budget lock: <60s
6-pin lock: 5–10min
Sold Secure Gold: very resistant

What Your Insurance Policy Actually Requires

Most homeowners assume their contents cover extends to the shed automatically. In many cases it does — but subject to security conditions that most sheds don't meet.

What Most Shed Policies Require

  • Minimum Sold Secure Silver or equivalent rated padlock on all entry points
  • All windows and alternative entry points secured with specified locks
  • High-value items (bikes, power tools over set limits) may require named-item cover — check your schedule
  • Business equipment stored in domestic sheds is often excluded entirely

The most common claim refusal

The padlock was present but the hasp fixings were accessible. Insurers argue there was no "forced entry" — the hasp was unscrewed, not broken. A security hasp with concealed fixings avoids this argument entirely.

How to Stay Policy-Compliant

  • Fit Sold Secure Gold rated padlock — typically satisfies Silver minimum requirements with margin
  • Use a security hasp with concealed fixings — prevents "no forced entry" refusal arguments
  • Fit window locks on any shed windows — many policies explicitly require all openings to be locked
  • Keep purchase receipts for high-value items in the shed — necessary to support a claim

Check before you claim

Read your policy schedule for the outbuildings security clause before assuming you're covered. We can recommend the hardware required to meet the most common UK insurer security conditions.

What We Fit & Install

What South London Customers Say

"Our garage had been broken into twice and we realised the shed at the back was even easier to get into. Called these guys and they came the next morning, replaced the flimsy hasp with a proper security one and fitted a closed-shackle padlock — explained exactly why the old setup was the problem. Reassuring to know it's done properly now."

Padlock & Hasp Upgrade

"I'd been told by my insurer that the shed locks didn't meet their requirements after a claim — they rejected it. Got this company in to upgrade both the door padlock and the two windows on the shed. Very knowledgeable, told me which Sold Secure rating my policy required, and fitted everything in under an hour. Claim is now back on track."

Window Locks + Padlock

"Used them when the padlock on my workshop shed seized up completely — couldn't get it open. They came same day, opened it without destroying the door, replaced the whole setup with a new Squire closed-shackle and security hasp. Much better than what was on there before. Straightforward, honest pricing, no nonsense."

A Closed-Shackle Padlock on a Security Hasp

The Combination That Actually Works

A rated padlock and a security hasp fitted correctly — not just screwed to the surface. That's what we install. Every time.

6 Shed Lock Problems We See Every Week

Most of these are easily fixed, but they leave your shed unprotected until they are.

Seized or Rusted Shackle

Outdoor padlocks corrode from the inside. The key goes in but the shackle won't release — or won't close properly after a cold winter. Rust is usually terminal in cheap padlocks.

Replace with a stainless or weather-rated padlock; we can open first if you're locked out

Hasp Screws Pulling Out

Softwood doors compress over time and screw threads strip. The hasp wiggles, screws back in, then pulls out again the next time someone forces the door shut. This is the most common "it still works" security failure.

Replace with through-bolt security hasp — coach bolts through the door, nut on the inside

Lost Shed Key

No key, no way in — until we arrive. We open the padlock without damage where the security grade allows, then replace the lock same visit so you don't leave the shed unsecured.

Emergency open + new padlock fitted in same visit; same-day South London service

Mismatched Hasp and Padlock

The padlock shackle diameter is too thin for the hasp staple, leaving a gap the shackle can be twisted out of. Or the hasp staple is too wide and the padlock body jangles loose — both reduce security dramatically.

We supply hasp and padlock as a matched system — no guesswork on sizing

Unlocked Shed Window

A padlock on the door means nothing if the window opens from outside with a flat screwdriver. Windows are the most frequently used secondary entry point on garden sheds — and almost always unprotected.

Keyed shed window lock, fitted to all openable windows; from £180

Insurance Non-Compliance

Your insurer requires "an approved padlock" or a lock "to British Standard" — your existing setup doesn't qualify. Discovered after a break-in when you try to claim and the policy won't pay out.

We assess your policy requirements and fit the correct Sold Secure rated hardware

Shed Security — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best padlock for a shed?
A Sold Secure Gold rated closed-shackle padlock paired with a security hasp with concealed fixings is the standard we recommend for most domestic sheds. Brands like Squire, ABUS, and Brisant manufacture rated options that resist the bolt cropper and angle grinder attacks most commonly used in shed break-ins. The padlock rating is only half the picture — the hasp must also be correctly fitted.
What is a closed-shackle padlock and why does it matter?
A closed-shackle padlock has the steel shackle (the U-shaped hoop) largely enclosed within the padlock body, leaving minimal exposed metal for bolt croppers to grip. A standard open-shackle padlock can be cut with a basic 600mm bolt cropper in one squeeze. A closed-shackle significantly raises the bar — even a prepared attacker needs longer and noisier methods.
Does my shed insurance require a Sold Secure lock?
Many UK home contents policies require a minimum Sold Secure Silver or equivalent rated padlock on outbuildings as a condition of cover. If you make a claim after a break-in and your padlock was not rated — or was rated but fitted on an inadequate hasp — the insurer may decline the claim. We can advise on the hardware required to meet most standard UK policy conditions. Always check your policy schedule for the exact outbuilding clause.
How much does shed padlock and hasp fitting cost in South London?
Shed padlock and hasp fitting pricing varies based on the lock grade required, the hasp type, and your shed door construction. We quote a fixed price before booking — send us photos of your shed door and existing setup on WhatsApp and we'll give you an accurate figure. Shed window lock fitting starts from £180 per window. Emergency lockout attendance starts from £120.
Can I fit a security hasp and padlock myself?
You can fit a hasp yourself, but the most common DIY error is using wood screws instead of coach bolts through the door frame. Surface-mount screws are the weakest link — the whole hasp can be levered off in seconds. If you want it done correctly and want an insurance-compliant installation, a professional fitting with through-bolting is the right approach. The labour cost is relatively modest against the value of the shed contents.
What is the difference between a discus padlock and a closed-shackle padlock?
A discus (or round) padlock has no exposed shackle at all — the entire lock mechanism is contained within a circular body with no protruding loop. This makes bolt cropper attacks almost impossible. A closed-shackle padlock still has a shackle but it's recessed into the body so minimal steel is exposed. Both are significantly more secure than open-shackle designs. Discus padlocks require a compatible hasp — we can advise which works for your shed.
Do you fit shed locks across all of South London?
Yes. We cover all South London areas including Sutton, Croydon, Norbury, Wimbledon, Streatham, Bromley, South Norwood, Morden, Carshalton, Cheam, Purley, and surrounding areas. Same-day appointments are usually available. See our full coverage map.
My combination padlock no longer opens — can you help?
Yes. We can open stuck or forgotten combination padlocks without destroying the shed door in most cases. After opening, we can fit a replacement lock in the same visit — we carry stock of common hasp-and-padlock combinations. Call or WhatsApp us and we can usually attend same day across South London. Emergency attendance starts from £120.
