South East London is not one neighbourhood. It is twenty-something postcodes stretching from the river south to Crystal Palace, and the lock on your front door tells us most of what we need to know before we even arrive.
SE London runs from SE1 in the shadow of London Bridge down through Camberwell, Peckham and East Dulwich, east through Greenwich and Lewisham, and on out to Crystal Palace, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Woolwich and Thamesmead. Every postcode along that arc has its own housing mix, its own lock standards and its own ways of going wrong — and we have spent the last decade fitting, fixing and changing locks across all of it.
The job rarely starts at the door. It starts on the phone, when we ask three quick questions: what is the postcode, what does the door look like, and what is the lock not doing? Nine times out of ten that is enough for us to know whether to bring a mortice deadlock, a euro cylinder, a uPVC gearbox, or all three.
SE London is a layer cake of housing eras and the locks reflect that. Victorian and Edwardian terraces dominate Dulwich (SE21), East Dulwich (SE22), Herne Hill (SE24), Forest Hill (SE23) and Brockley (SE4). Original front doors are usually wooden with a 5-lever mortice deadlock around hip height and a Yale-style night latch above. Sixty to a hundred years old — we normally recommend a like-for-like BS3621 swap rather than fight the antique.
Ex-local authority and council estates across Peckham (SE15), Walworth (SE17), Bermondsey (SE16) and parts of Woolwich (SE18) tend to run a fortified composite or steel-skinned door fitted in late-90s regeneration programmes. The lock is usually a multi-point gearbox with a high-security euro cylinder. When these fail, it is almost always the gearbox — the cylinder itself is fine.
Riverside and dock conversions from Rotherhithe (SE16) through Surrey Quays, Deptford (SE8) and Greenwich (SE10) sit between the two. Late-80s to mid-2000s flats with communal entry plus a flat door with a Banham M2002 restricted-key cylinder, a Mul-T-Lock barrel or a standard euro. Post-war semis and 1930s detached through Lee (SE12), Mottingham, Eltham (SE9), Catford (SE6) and parts of Sydenham (SE26) run more variety, with 1990s uPVC retrofits now reaching end-of-life.
Three patterns drive most SE call-outs. One: the housing stock is old and locks have a service life. A mortice fitted in 1960 has done its time. A euro fitted in 2002 has seen twenty-plus years of weather. Two: the 1990s uPVC bulge. A wave of uPVC doors went in across SE London between 1992 and 2005 using gearboxes (Yale, GU, Fuhr, Avantis) that share a predictable failure window — we see “door won’t lift, key spins, hooks won’t throw” calls from SE13/SE14/SE15 every month. Three: post-burglary upgrades. One break-in on a road usually brings three or four neighbouring TS007 anti-snap upgrades over the following fortnight.
Most SE jobs sit within a short hop of somewhere recognisable. We are regulars at Greenwich Park (SE10), Crystal Palace Park (SE19/SE20), Dulwich Village (SE21), around Peckham Rye (SE15), at Woolwich Arsenal (SE18), around Brockley (SE4), at Forest Hill station (SE23), and at Lewisham shopping centre (SE13) and Catford Bridge (SE6).
Our duty vehicles run from a base just south of the river with direct access to four major SE arteries: the A2 down through New Cross to Blackheath, the A20 through Lewisham to Eltham, the A21 to Catford and Bromley, and the A205 South Circular linking Crystal Palace to Greenwich. For inner SE we are normally on site in 20-30 minutes off-peak. Live ETA on every call before we set off.

Locked out at 11pm after a long day. Called and got a real person, not a call centre. Turned up in 28 minutes, picked the cylinder open without breaking anything, fitted a TS007 anti-snap on the spot for a sensible price. The whole thing was the calmest part of my night.

Forest Hill, SE23 · Lockout + anti-snap upgrade
uPVC front door stopped lifting properly — the handle wouldn’t lock unless you slammed it. Other locksmiths quoted full door replacement. These guys diagnosed a worn gearbox, ordered the right part, came back the next morning and swapped it in 45 minutes. Saved me about £600.

Greenwich, SE10 · uPVC gearbox replacement
Insurance renewal asked for a BS3621 5-lever on the front and a TS007 3-star cylinder on the side. Booked Saturday morning, fitted Saturday afternoon, written certificate emailed before I finished tea. Renewal went through without a fuss. Polite, tidy, didn’t leave a single packet behind.

Seven things we get asked on the phone most weeks. If your question is not here, ask us when you call.
As your local locksmith South East London, we aim to be on site within 30 minutes of your call across all SE postcodes from SE1 through SE28. Our duty vehicles run from a base just south of the river with direct A2, A20, A21 and A205 access to South East London. Call 0208 050 2017 and we will give you a live ETA before we set off.
Yes — as a locksmith South East London-wide we cover the full SE range from SE1 (Bermondsey, Borough) through to SE28 (Thamesmead). That includes inner SE areas like Peckham, Camberwell, Greenwich and Lewisham, and outer SE like Crystal Palace, Forest Hill, Dulwich, Woolwich and Plumstead.
Most SE London front doors fall into three groups:
Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Dulwich, Forest Hill and Brockley usually have a wooden door with a 5-lever mortice deadlock plus a night latch.
Council and ex-local flats in Peckham, Walworth and Rotherhithe typically run a Yale-style night latch on the door and a chubb deadlock below.
uPVC and composite doors, common in 1990s-2000s new-builds across SE15, SE16 and SE28, run a multi-point locking gearbox with a euro cylinder.
Standard emergency lockout starts from £69. Standard lock replacement starts from £189 plus parts. Anti-snap upgrades from £200. Euro cylinder replacement from £135. uPVC gearbox repair from £350. We do not charge a call-out fee and the price is agreed before any work starts.
Yes. Most SE London home insurance policies require BS3621-rated 5-lever mortice locks on wooden doors and TS007 3-star (or 1-star + 2-star hardware) cylinders on uPVC and composite doors. We carry stock from Era, Avocet ABS, Yale Platinum and Ultion. We can issue a written certificate of installation if your insurer asks.
Yes — most uPVC failures in SE London come from worn multi-point gearboxes (typical on 1990s-2000s installs), dropped hinges, or seized euro cylinders. We diagnose on site, replace just the failed component where possible (gearbox, cylinder, hinge), and only replace the full mechanism if the door alignment is too far gone for a part swap.
Yes — we accept card or cash on completion. The card terminal lives in the van. The price is fixed on the phone and the same fixed price comes off the card on the door — no doorstep renegotiation.
We have been on SE doorsteps for over a decade. None of this is a sales pitch — it is what shows up on the day.
