What Is an Anti-Snap Cylinder Lock?
The answer to the single biggest weakness in modern uPVC and composite door security.
Lock snapping is not a sophisticated attack. A burglar grips the exposed end of a standard euro cylinder lock with a pair of pliers or a mole wrench, applies force until the barrel snaps in half, then pulls the broken section out and turns the remaining mechanism with a flat-head screwdriver. The whole process takes under 10 seconds. No special tools. No training. According to police data, around 73% of domestic break-ins happen through the front or back door, and in areas where uPVC doors are common, lock snapping accounts for a significant portion of those entries.
An anti-snap cylinder lock is engineered specifically to defeat this attack. The cylinder contains a sacrificial snap line -- a deliberate weak point built into the outer section of the barrel. If someone tries to snap it, the cylinder breaks at this designed point instead of along the centre. The outer piece comes away, but the inner core stays locked in place. The cam mechanism that operates your multipoint locking system remains protected behind the door, untouched and inaccessible.
Better-quality anti-snap cylinders go further. Brands like Brisant Ultion use hardened molybdenum alloy with a "lock-down mode" -- if the outer section is snapped off, a secondary locking mechanism activates inside the remaining core, making it physically impossible to turn. Avocet ABS cylinders use anti-pick spool pins and hardened anti-drill inserts alongside the snap protection. These are not just anti-snap -- they are anti-snap, anti-bump, anti-drill and anti-pick in one unit.
The security rating matters. Look for TS007 3-star (the British Standard for enhanced security cylinders) or SS312 Diamond (the higher standard set by the Master Locksmith Association and Sold Secure). Both are accepted by UK insurers, but SS312 Diamond involves more rigorous attack testing. A BSI Kitemark stamp on the face of the cylinder confirms independent testing. If your current cylinder does not have these markings, it is almost certainly a basic euro cylinder with no snap resistance.

Short answer: if your door uses a euro profile cylinder, almost certainly yes. Here is how to work it out.
Check Your Current Lock
Three signs your lock is vulnerable to snapping:
Cylinder protrudes more than 5mm beyond the handle or escutcheon plate. This exposed section can be gripped with pliers.
No BSI Kitemark or TS007 stamp on the face of the cylinder. Unmarked cylinders are basic euro profile with no snap protection.
Lock installed before 2012. Anti-snap cylinders only became mainstream after 2010. If your lock predates this, it almost certainly has no snap resistance.
Door Types That Need Anti-Snap
uPVC Doors (most vulnerable)
Multipoint locking with euro cylinder. The default cylinder fitted by door manufacturers is almost always a basic, snappable unit. The single most common target for lock snapping in South London.
Composite Doors
Stronger door panel than uPVC, but uses the same euro profile cylinder. The door itself may resist being kicked in, but the cylinder can still be snapped. Upgrading the cylinder is the obvious fix.
Timber Doors with Euro Cylinder
Some wooden doors use multipoint locks with euro cylinders instead of traditional mortice deadlocks. If yours does, it needs an anti-snap cylinder. If your timber door uses a mortice lock, that is a different mechanism and not vulnerable to snapping.
Insurance and Compliance
Many UK home insurance policies now specify minimum lock standards. If your policy requires locks rated to BS3621 or TS007 3-star, a standard euro cylinder will not meet this requirement. Fitting an anti-snap cylinder rated to TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond satisfies these conditions and may reduce your premium.
