What a lock change actually costs in South London

Most UK price guides average the whole country — useful if you're in Wrexham, less useful if you're in Wallington. This page shows the real fitted prices our locksmiths charge across South London in 2026, by lock type, not by hourly rate. Every postcode we cover is listed on our areas we cover hub, and the same fitted figures apply everywhere.

The price you see is the price we invoice. A Euro cylinder change is £135 fitted, full stop. A BS3621 mortice change is £180. A night latch replacement is £250. Deadlocks start at £180. Parts, labour, and VAT are included. Response time is 30–45 minutes across SW, SE, CR, SM, and BR postcodes — and if you want the technical background, our locksmith advice blog walks through lock types, BS3621 compliance, and security gradings.

Quick sanity check: if a locksmith refuses to give you a fitted price before they arrive, keep looking. Fixed quotes aren't a luxury — they're the standard any reputable tradesperson should give you. Get in touch if you want one before you book.

What actually affects your price

Six things change the final figure. None of them are hourly rates, parking, or mystery "trip fees" — we include all that upfront.

1. Lock grade chosen

A basic 5-pin cylinder starts at £135. A TS007 3-star anti-snap is £200. A Kitemarked Ultion £240. Higher grades cost more because the cylinders themselves cost more — not because the labour changes.

2. Door type

uPVC and composite doors take a Euro cylinder (fast). Timber doors with a mortice lock are slower to fit because the lock pocket is chiselled into the door edge. Different jobs, different prices.

3. Time of day

Daytime prices apply until midnight, 7 days a week. Only after midnight do out-of-hours rates kick in — and we'll tell you that figure on the phone before we set off.

4. How many locks

Changing one cylinder is the standard price. Changing four locks on a move-in property is cheaper per lock because we're already on site — we bundle the quote honestly.

5. Damage on the door

If the door, hinges, or gearbox are damaged, additional parts may be needed. We show you the issue in person and quote before touching anything. No "while we're here" surprises.

6. Insurance compliance

Your policy may demand BS3621 or TS007 locks. Fitting the wrong grade can void a claim. We check your policy wording first and recommend only what it requires — not a forced upsell.

Why "£49 lock changes" end up costing £400

The rogue-operator pattern is simple: cheap headline, expensive reality. If you've ever felt bait-and-switched on a lock call-out, this is probably what happened.

The £49 trap

  • £49 is the labour-only figure — parts added separately
  • "Call-out fee" of £80–£150 appears at the door
  • VAT added on top at 20%
  • Drilling charged as a separate £100 "destructive entry" line
  • "Upgraded" cylinder sold at triple the retail price
  • Final invoice often £350–£600, demanded before they leave

How we price instead

  • No hidden fees — the fitted price you're quoted is the price you pay
  • No VAT — every figure on this page is the total, full stop
  • 12 months warranty on all locks we fit
  • Cash or card accepted immediately on completion of work

How to check any locksmith in 30 seconds: ask for a fitted price before they arrive. Ask if there's a call-out fee. Ask if VAT is added. A real tradesperson answers in three numbers. A chancer changes the subject.

Lock replacement cost FAQ

How much does it cost to change a lock in the UK?
A standard Euro cylinder lock change in South London starts at £135 fitted. A BS3621 5-lever mortice lock starts at £180. Anti-snap cylinder upgrades start at £200. All our prices are fixed, with no call-out fee, and include parts, labour, and VAT.
Is it cheaper to change just the barrel or the whole lock?
For uPVC and composite doors, changing only the Euro cylinder barrel is usually the cheapest option at £135 fitted — the main lock body rarely needs replacing unless it's damaged. For timber doors with a BS3621 mortice, the whole lock body is typically changed as a single unit because the case and levers are integrated.
How much does an emergency locksmith cost out of hours in London?
Our daytime prices apply right up until midnight, seven days a week. Only after midnight do out-of-hours rates increase, and we'll give you the exact figure on the phone before we dispatch. There's no call-out fee at any time of day.
Do my locks need to be BS3621 for home insurance?
Most UK home insurance policies require BS3621 5-lever mortice locks on timber exit doors and anti-snap TS007 3-star cylinders on uPVC/composite doors. A non-compliant lock can void a claim, so the cheapest lock is rarely the best value. We check your policy wording first and fit only what it requires.
How much does it cost to change all the locks in a house?
A typical South London property with a front and back door plus 2–3 window locks usually costs £300–£550 fitted, depending on the lock grade you choose. We offer a free security audit and only recommend what's needed for insurance compliance and real-world security — never a forced upsell.
