What Is a Yale Lock?

When most people say "Yale lock," they mean the spring-loaded latch on their front door — the one that clicks shut behind you and opens with a small flat key. Technically, this is a rim-mounted nightlatch, and Yale is the brand that made it ubiquitous across British homes. The lock sits on the inside face of your door with a cylinder poking through to the outside. Turn the key, the latch retracts, the door opens. Let go, the spring snaps it shut again.

Yale makes several nightlatch models and each one has meaningfully different security. The Yale 77 is the basic budget model — functional, but the angled latch can be pushed back with a credit card (locksmiths call this "carding"). The Yale 85 and Yale 89 are deadlocking nightlatches — once the door is closed, the latch bolt locks in place and cannot be carded. The Yale PBS1 is the only Yale nightlatch rated to BS3621, which is the standard most UK home insurers require. If your insurer asks for a BS3621 lock and you only have a standard Yale 77, you may not be covered in a break-in claim.

We fit every Yale nightlatch model across South London — from basic replacements to BS3621 upgrades. We also supply the newer Yale Conexis L2 smart lock for homeowners who want keyless entry. Is a Yale Lock Right for Your Door?

Yale is right if:

  • + You have a timber or composite front door
  • + You want a self-closing latch for daily convenience
  • + You need a quick, same-day lock replacement
  • + You are pairing it with a mortice deadlock below
  • + You want the PBS1 for standalone BS3621 compliance

Consider alternatives if:

  • - You have a uPVC or multipoint door (need a euro cylinder instead)
  • - You want keyless entry (consider a keypad lock or smart lock)
  • - Your insurer demands BS3621 and you do not want two locks
  • - You need high-security for a commercial property

What Our Customers Say

"My old Yale lock had been stiff for months and finally jammed completely on a Friday evening. He arrived within 25 minutes, opened the door without damage, and fitted a new Yale 89 deadlocking nightlatch. Explained the difference between the models and why my old one was a security risk. Really professional."

"Our insurer flagged that our front door Yale was not BS3621. He fitted a new Yale plus a 5-lever mortice deadlock below it, both insurance-grade. He even wrote down the BS numbers for us to send to the insurance company. Brilliant service."

"Quick Yale lock change on a Victorian front door in Tooting. He matched the new lock to the existing door prep perfectly — no extra drilling needed. Was done in under half an hour. Will use again for the back door."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Yale lock?
A Yale lock is a rim-mounted nightlatch that sits on the inside of your front door. You open it from outside with a flat key and from inside with a snib or handle. Yale makes several models: the basic 77, the deadlocking 85 and 89, the BS3621-rated PBS1, and smart locks like the Conexis L2. When people say "Yale lock" they usually mean a nightlatch, but Yale also makes euro cylinders and deadlocks.
Are Yale locks insurance approved?
Standard Yale nightlatches (77, 85, 89) are NOT BS3621 approved and do not meet most UK home insurance requirements on their own. The Yale PBS1 is the only nightlatch with BS3621 certification. Most insurers require BS3621 on every external door, so you typically need either a PBS1 or a separate 5-lever mortice deadlock alongside your nightlatch.
How much does it cost to replace a Yale lock?
A full Yale nightlatch replacement starts from £250 including supply and fitting. A rim cylinder-only change (the part the key goes into) starts from £135. Emergency lockout starts from £120. BS3621 upgrades with the Yale PBS1 cost more due to the hardware. We quote a fixed price before starting.
Can a Yale lock be opened with a credit card?
A standard non-deadlocking Yale (like the Yale 77) can be carded — a flexible card slides between the door and frame and pushes the angled latch back. Deadlocking models (85, 89, PBS1) have an anti-thrust bolt that locks the latch in place once the door closes, preventing this attack. If your Yale can be carded, upgrade to a deadlocking model.
What is the difference between a Yale lock and a deadlock?
A Yale nightlatch has a spring-loaded latch that clicks shut automatically. A deadlock has a bolt that only moves when you turn the key. For a properly secured front door, most locksmiths recommend both: a Yale nightlatch for everyday convenience plus a mortice deadlock below it for insurance compliance and forced-entry resistance.
