What they actually are

A fingerprint lock is a mechanical lock with a biometric reader bolted on

Strip back the marketing and a fingerprint door lock is three things: a small biometric sensor that reads your finger, a tiny processor that compares the scan to stored templates, and a motor or solenoid that rotates a standard cylinder. The cylinder is the part that matters for security — the reader is a convenience layer.

That distinction is why a £45 marketplace lock and a £250 Yale-badged unit can look identical but behave very differently in a break-in. Cheap units bolt onto sub-standard cylinders that snap in under 10 seconds with a mole grip. Properly specified units sit on top of a TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond cylinder — the same core you would pay £200+ for in a standalone upgrade.

The reader itself has come a long way. Mid-range models now scan in under half a second, store your fingerprint as a hashed mathematical template (never the image itself), and use liveness detection to reject silicone moulds. But the sensor will always be the thing that fails first — moisture, dust, cuts, children rubbing sugary fingers on it. That is why every lock we fit has at least two other ways in: a PIN pad, a physical key, or both.

We fit biometric locks across SE, SW, CR, SM and BR postcodes — from Brixton flats to Coulsdon family homes to HMOs in Thornton Heath. We survey the door first, because half of the fingerprint locks on Amazon will not physically fit a UK uPVC multipoint door. The survey is free and there is no obligation.

Want the shortcut? See our keyless entry locks overview for all unlock methods, or jump to the smart door locks category page for a wider comparison.

Anatomy of a scan

How a fingerprint door lock opens a door

Four steps happen inside the lock every time you touch the sensor — in under a second.

1

Capture

Sensor wakes on touch. A capacitive grid or optical camera maps 30+ unique ridge points on your finger in ~150 ms.

2

Hash & match

The capture is converted to a one-way mathematical template. No image is stored. It is compared only to the templates already on the lock — not the cloud.

3

Verify liveness

Modern sensors also check for pulse, sub-dermal ridges or electrical signature — rejecting lifted prints, silicone copies and cold/dead fingers.

4

Actuate

On match, a small DC motor rotates the cylinder cam the same 60° a key would. On failure, the log increments and after 5 tries the lock locks out for 30 sec.

Know before you buy

Three sensor types — they are not the same

The sensor technology decides how quickly the lock reads your finger, how accurate it is with wet or dry fingers, and how hard it is to spoof. Most locks sold online do not tell you which type they use. Here is the plain-English version.

Who actually benefits

Six households where a fingerprint lock is the right call

We have fitted these on every South London door type. If one of these sounds like you, a fingerprint lock is probably a fit. If none of them do, we will tell you to stick with a traditional key.

Families with school-age kids

No more "lost my key", no keyring hanging off a school bag advertising the address. Kids scan in and a parent gets an app notification.

Elderly residents

Arthritis makes keys hard. Fingers do not. Plus a carer / family member fob means no spare key hidden under a pot — the classic burglar target.

HMO landlords

Tenant leaves? Delete their print in 10 seconds. No lock swap, no key cutting, no locksmith call-out bill between tenancies. Fire-escape compliant.

Short-term rental / Airbnb hosts

Guest-specific PIN expires on checkout. No more lockbox hunting, no keys in envelopes, and an audit log of exactly when each guest arrived.

Busy professionals & commuters

Running for the train with coffee in hand, rucksack on shoulder. One finger and the door opens — no digging through bags in the rain.

Small offices & retail stockrooms

Staff come and go. Fingerprint entry means no spare keys circulating, per-person audit trail, and instant access revocation when someone leaves.

Transparent install

Five steps, 60–180 minutes, nothing hidden

We have fitted hundreds of these. The process is the same every time — we just adapt the cylinder measurements to your door. You get a written spec sheet on completion for your insurer, and a 12-month workmanship warranty on the fit.

Fingerprint smart lock with touch sensor fitted to a residential door
Workmanship warranty: 12 months on the fit. Manufacturer warranty on the lock (typically 2 years).
Free door survey15 min

We measure the existing Euro cylinder to the nearest millimetre (internal + external length, handedness, cam offset), check the multipoint gearbox, inspect the door thickness, and confirm the handle backplate footprint. Half the fingerprint locks sold online will not physically fit a UK multipoint uPVC door — we catch this before you spend money.

Spec sheet & quote10 min

We write up the recommended model, the cylinder grade (TS007 3★ or Sold Secure Diamond), the cylinder size, and a fixed fitting fee. The price you see is the price you pay. If the quote is accepted, we order the parts and book the fit — usually same day for our van stock brands.

Remove old cylinder / handle15 min

Retaining screw out, old cylinder withdrawn, handle plates removed. We inspect the mechanism while it is open — if the gearbox is on its way out we will flag it now, not after a callback. Non-destructive fit where possible — no drilling, no enlarged holes.

Fit, torque, test mechanical20–40 min

New fingerprint cylinder or handle fitted, retaining screw torqued to manufacturer spec. We test the lock 20 times on the bench and on the door — latch throw, bolt throw, multipoint engagement, key override. If any of those feel off, we adjust the gearbox keep before sign-off, not after.

Enrol users & hand-over15 min

Every resident gets two fingers enrolled (primary + backup), labelled in the app. Master PIN set, backup PIN set, mechanical key tested. We walk through revoking a user, adding a guest, and low-battery procedure. You get a printed spec sheet for your insurer.

Compatibility

Door types we fit fingerprint locks on

Most London front doors fall into four categories. Each one changes the product you need. We measure yours before we quote.

Yes — most common

uPVC multipoint

The standard London front door. Needs a fingerprint Euro cylinder cut to your exact size (usually 35/40 or 40/45). We keep the multipoint gearbox and handle.
Best match: Yale Linus L2 · Eufy Video Smart Lock E330
Yes — premium fit

Composite door

Thicker (44–48 mm) with a solid GRP skin. Fingerprint cylinders available, but we usually recommend a full smart handle for best rigidity on a heavier door.
Best match: ULTRALOQ U-Bolt Pro · Ultion Nuki
Depends — mortice check

Timber / wooden door

Period terraces and conservation areas. If the door has a BS3621 mortice + nightlatch, we fit a fingerprint nightlatch replacement. If it uses a cylinder deadlock, we fit a fingerprint cylinder.
Best match: Yale Smart Nightlatch · Kwikset Halo Touch
Yes — aluminium fit

Aluminium & office doors

Slim-profile aluminium on shopfronts, side entrances, flats. Needs a narrow-style Euro cylinder — not all fingerprint cylinders come in narrow form. We verify before quoting.
Best match: ULTRALOQ Bolt · Schlage Encode Plus

Day-one hygiene

Three things to do the week you fit it

A fingerprint lock that takes ten minutes to set up correctly will outperform a £500 unit that was never configured. These three habits close the real attack surface.

01

Enrol two fingers per user, label them in the app

A single enrolled finger is a single point of failure — a paper cut, plaster or cold fingertip and you are locked out. Enrol the pad of your index finger plus the side of your thumb, and label them in the app so you know which to delete if a family member leaves.

Lockout risk
02

Change the master PIN, then stop sharing it

Every fingerprint lock ships with a default master PIN of "0000" or "123456". Change it on day one to a 6-digit number that is not your door number, postcode or DOB. Keep the master PIN off the household WhatsApp — it is the override that bypasses fingerprints.

Password hygiene
03

Set a battery reminder for 12 months

Most fingerprint locks give you four weeks of low-battery warning — plenty of time, until a reader LED in a dark hallway gets ignored. Put a calendar reminder 12 months ahead to replace all four cells at once. Keep a spare pack next to the door — or the app QR code on the back of the hallway mirror.

Myths debunked

Five fingerprint lock myths we hear every week

Marketing, news headlines and TikTok have muddied the facts. Here is what we actually see on doors, not clickbait.

Myth

"Burglars can lift a print off a glass and 3D-print a key to get in."

Fact

Demonstrated in controlled lab conditions only. Requires a clean print, a lab, silicone glue and a matching sensor. In 15 years of UK burglary data we have not seen one attack that used this method — burglars smash glass.

Myth

"Your fingerprint is sent to the cloud and Big Tech has a copy."

Fact

On every mainstream brand, your print is converted to a hashed mathematical template on the lock itself. The original image is discarded instantly. The cloud never sees it — only the match result (yes / no).

Myth

"If the battery dies you're locked out on the street."

Fact

Every lock we fit has a mechanical key override, a jump-start terminal, or both. Battery goes flat → touch a 9V cell to the emergency contact → unlock. We test this on day one so you know what to do.

Myth

"Home insurance won't cover a claim if I fit a smart lock."

Fact

UK insurers check the underlying cylinder standard (TS007 3★ or BS3621), not the reader. Every fingerprint lock we fit pairs with an insurance-grade cylinder, and we give you the spec sheet for your policy.

Myth

"Fingerprint locks only last 2 years before the reader wears out."

Fact

Quality sensors are rated for 300,000+ reads — around 15 years of family use. The cheap £40 marketplace locks may fail at 18 months; the brands we fit have 2-year manufacturer + 12-month fit warranties layered on top.

Had a Eufy E330 sat in a box for six months because I'd read online it wouldn't fit my uPVC door. The guy came, measured the cylinder in under a minute, said yes it fits but I'd need a 40/45 not the 35/35 in the box. Ordered the right one, came back next morning, fitted it in about 90 minutes and enrolled all four of us. Small thing but — he sat with my mum until she could unlock it herself.

Landlord of three HMOs in Thornton Heath. Wanted fingerprint locks across all front doors so I could revoke tenants without re-keying every time. They specced ULTRALOQ Bolts paired with TS007 3-star cylinders for insurance. All three done in a day and a half. Invoice paid on 30-day terms no quibble. Saved me about £400 a year in re-key call-outs.

Bought a cheap fingerprint lock off Amazon, watched it fall off the door two weeks later because I didn't torque the retaining screw. Called these guys mortified. Still not sure?

Questions we actually get asked

Short, honest answers — written by the people who fit these locks every week.

Do fingerprint door locks work on UK uPVC and composite doors?
Yes, but only specific models. Most UK uPVC and composite doors use a multipoint mechanism driven by a Euro profile cylinder — and a standalone US-style deadbolt will not fit. We use fingerprint cylinder conversions and smart handle replacements sized specifically for UK multipoint locks. We measure your existing cylinder (internal length / external length / cam offset) before quoting, so the one we fit is an exact match. See our uPVC door locks page for more on the mechanism behind it.
How secure is a fingerprint lock compared to a British Standard key lock?
A well-chosen fingerprint lock fitted by a locksmith is comparable to a BS3621 key lock — and typically adds a PIN code and physical key as backup, giving three layers of access. The deciding factor is the underlying cylinder grade, which is where cheap locks fall over. We only fit fingerprint products built around anti-snap TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond cylinders, so the mechanical core is as strong as a premium traditional lock. See anti-snap locks for more on cylinder grades.
Can burglars fake a fingerprint to open the lock?
In theory, yes — lab-condition attacks using a high-resolution lifted print and a silicone mould have been demonstrated. In practice, it is vanishingly rare. Modern sensors use capacitive or ultrasonic reading plus liveness detection (pulse, temperature or sub-dermal ridges) — and every lock we fit has a PIN and key backup, so an attacker would need to defeat all three. Real-world UK burglaries overwhelmingly still use brute force on windows and lock-snapping — biometric spoofing is not a method we have seen once.
What happens if the batteries die?
Every lock we fit keeps either a mechanical key override, a 9-volt emergency jump-start contact on the outside, or both. You will never be locked out. Typical battery life on the models we stock is 8–18 months from 4 × AA or AAA cells, with a low-battery warning four weeks before full drain. We also leave a spare set of cells with you and set a calendar reminder for the annual swap.
How many fingerprints can I store?
Capacity depends on the model — entry-level units store 20 prints, mid-range store 100, and commercial models store up to 300. We recommend enrolling two fingers per person (a primary and a backup), so a four-person household typically uses 8 slots. We enrol and label every user in the app before we leave the property.
Will my home insurance cover me with a fingerprint lock?
UK home insurers check the mechanical cylinder, not the electronic reader. Provided the underlying cylinder is TS007 3-star, Sold Secure Diamond, or BS3621 compliant, the lock meets typical policy wording. We always pair fingerprint locks with insurance-grade cylinders and give you a written spec sheet for your insurer — make, model, cylinder grade, BS number, fit date. See our insurance-approved door locks page for the full list of accepted standards.
Can a fingerprint lock be hacked through the app or Bluetooth?
App-based attacks have been reported on cheap unbranded locks sold on marketplaces. We only fit locks from manufacturers with a published firmware update policy, AES-128 or stronger encryption, and an independent security audit. Crucially — if the app is compromised, the physical cylinder and fingerprint still work. Connectivity is a convenience layer, not the security layer. For a wider look at network-connected locks see Bluetooth door locks and Wi-Fi door locks.
How long does a fingerprint door lock installation take?
A straight swap into an existing Euro cylinder door takes 60–90 minutes including enrolment and testing. A full handle replacement on a uPVC door takes 90–120 minutes. A timber door with a mortice-to-cylinder conversion takes 2–3 hours. We quote the time before we start so there are no surprises, and every fit comes with a 12-month workmanship warranty.
