Locking up TW9 — what makes Richmond work different

Richmond's lock work is shaped by one fact that doesn't apply to any other London postcode we serve: the borough has 85 conservation areas and over 450 listed buildings inside the Central Richmond Conservation Area alone. Listed Building Consent applies to the inside of a property as well as the outside, which means almost every lock decision in TW9 starts with "is this listed, and to what grade?".

The Grade I cluster sits on Richmond Green: Maids of Honour Row — four c.1720s terraced Georgian houses considered one of the finest examples of a Georgian terrace in the country — plus Trumpeter's House and Garrick House. On these properties we replace internal mortice cases like-for-like with a kitemark BS3621 5-lever, retaining the original 18th-century brass face plate. We never modify the door joinery, never change the visible street face, and never fit modern Euro-cylinder hardware where the original mortice is intact.

Richmond Hill is a separate Conservation Area sub-zone — the Georgian terraces lining the Hill up to its crest now have listed building status. Hill households often want restricted-keyway Mul-T-Lock MT5+ or Banham M2002 — copy-control across the cleaner, gardener and trusted family without modifying the original face.

Kew Green Conservation Area No. 2 is a separate appraisal — properties here sit close to the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew World Heritage Site buffer zone, which adds an extra layer of consideration on visible external work. Internal mortice retrofits are the standard route.

Out east, Mortlake Road, Sheen Road and the East Sheen border mostly sit outside the listed/CA constraints — Edwardian semis where standard BS3621 mortice and anti-snap cylinder upgrades dominate the diary.
