Lock Security GuideWritten by Our Locksmith · Professional Locksmiths · South London · 8 min read
A British Standard lock — one that meets the BS3621 specification — is the security benchmark recognised by UK home insurers, and if your policy mentions "BS3621" or a "5-lever mortice deadlock", fitting one could be the difference between a valid claim and a voided policy. Whether you need a lock fitted, an anti-snap cylinder upgraded, or simply want to understand your options, our DBS-checked South London locksmiths are available 24 hours a day with no call-out fee and a fixed price quoted before we start.
In this guide, our Level 3 City & Guilds locksmith explains exactly what British Standard means, which lock types qualify, how to spot the Kitemark, and which locks we recommend for South London homes. Already decided? Jump straight to our lock change service.
A BS3621 lock is one that has been independently tested by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and proven to resist the most common attack methods used by burglars: picking, drilling, cylinder snapping, and key bumping. The number 3621 refers to the specific BSI specification for "thief-resistant locks", first introduced in the 1980s and regularly updated to reflect current methods.
Every BS3621-certified lock carries the BSI Kitemark — a kite-shaped quality mark stamped onto the lock face, cylinder body, or packaging. When your insurer says "we require a BS3621 lock", they are asking for this independently verified level of security.
The standard covers three main lock types: mortice deadlocks (the 5-lever type fitted inside a timber door), euro cylinder locks (which must also meet the TS007 3-star anti-snap rating), and rim cylinders. If your lock does not carry the Kitemark, it is not BS3621 — regardless of how old or sturdy it looks.
Most UK home insurance policies require your front door to have a BS3621-certified lock for your contents cover to remain valid. This is especially important in London, where insurers are acutely aware of local burglary statistics. A standard Yale-type latch — which is not BS3621 — may leave your claim vulnerable to rejection after a break-in.
Check your policy document carefully. Look for phrases such as "5-lever mortice deadlock to BS3621", "approved lock", or "Kitemark-approved". If in doubt, our locksmiths can inspect your current locks and advise on compliance during a lock change visit — and we carry approved brands in the van for a same-day fix.
Beyond insurance, BS3621 locks provide genuine security benefits. The testing process requires the lock to withstand 10 minutes of sustained attack — a threshold that defeats most opportunistic burglars who rely on speed and moving on quickly.
Understanding the three main BS3621 lock types helps you choose the right one for your door:
5-Lever Mortice Deadlock
The most commonly required lock type. Fitted inside a timber door body, it has five levers that must align to open. Brands include Yale, Chubb, and Union. Excellent resistance to picking and drilling.
Euro Cylinder (TS007 3-Star Anti-Snap)
Used in uPVC and composite doors. A standard euro cylinder is highly vulnerable to snapping — a 10-second attack method. A TS007 3-star cylinder resists this and is accepted by insurers. Brands include Ultion, Avocet ABS, and ERA Fortress.
Rim Cylinder / Night Latch
Yale-type rim locks can carry the BS3621 mark when combined with a compliant rim lock body. Less common as a sole insurer requirement, but valid when correctly certified.
The quickest method is to look for the BSI Kitemark — a kite-shaped logo with "BS3621" below it — stamped on the lock face or cylinder body. If the Kitemark is there, the lock is certified. If not, it almost certainly is not.
A few things to check:
Older 5-lever mortice locks without the Kitemark may have been quality products at the time, but they do not satisfy an insurer's requirement for a British Standard lock.
The right lock depends on your door type. Here's what our locksmiths typically recommend:
Timber Doors
Yale 5-lever BS3621 mortice deadlock or Union 5-lever deadlock. Accepted by all UK insurers, widely available, and proven in South London homes.
uPVC & Composite Doors
Ultion anti-snap cylinder (TS007 3-star). Features a patented sacrificial break-off section and includes a £2,000 burglary guarantee. Avocet ABS and ERA Fortress are strong budget alternatives.
Additional Security
Letter box restrictor (prevents hook fishing attacks) and hinge bolts on external timber doors. Often overlooked but quickly fitted during a lock change visit.
If you need a BS3621-certified lock fitted, our South London locksmiths are available 24/7. We supply and fit mortice deadlocks and TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders with a fixed price quoted before we start — no call-out fee, no hidden charges.
A full lock change typically takes 30–60 minutes. We carry a range of approved lock brands in the van, so a second visit is rarely needed. We cover all South London postcodes: SW, SE, CR, SM, and BR areas.
All our locksmiths are DBS checked, City & Guilds Level 3 qualified, and carry full public liability insurance. Call or WhatsApp for a no-obligation quote — we'll tell you the fixed price before we arrive.
